Hopi Ear Candle Therapy
Ear candles can be traced back many thousands of years in Asia, North and South America. The Hopi tribe of Arizona are said to be responsible for bringing the knowledge of ear candle treatment to Europe.
The "candles" are thin, usually made from honey extract or beeswax and often containing essential oils, with a filter. A candle is carefully inserted into each ear and lit. The healing properties of the ear candle work in two ways; the pressure inside the ear candle and the vibration of the rising air works like a chimney, which massages the ear drum and promotes secretion of the frontal and paranasal sinuses. This has an immediate effect of regulating ear pressure. Secondly the warmth stimulates vascularisation, invigorates the immune system and stimulates lymph flow.
A face massage is performed after the ear candles are removed which stimulates acupuncture points and reflex zones. Following the massage each ear candle is opened so that the therapist can examine the contents which can be an indication of the condition of the ears.
